About This Site
This site was created as part of the Women's Suffrage Digitization Project, under the
direction of the Rochester Regional Library Council
(RRLC) and supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds, awarded
to The New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Women's Suffrage Digitization Project was a two-year project that allowed area
institutions to learn about digitization and to mount an ad hoc digitization effort.
In October 1998, RRLC began involving libraries in a discussion about digitization in
order to create a plan for the digitization of unique resources related to the
Womens Suffrage Movement. Teams of librarians, historians and other interested
people met to over the course of the next year to discuss management, technical, and
content issues. The outcome of those discussions and research done by RRLC was compiled
into one document, the Womens Suffrage
Digitization Project (WSDP) General Implementation Guidelines and WSDP Blueprint Document.
The Guidelines Document also contains a list of those people who participated in the
planning project.
In October 1999, RRLC began to implement that plan, digitize items in the region and
create a web site of suffrage information. X-number of institutions participated in
the project by allowing the project to digitize and display some of their items on this
web site. The images and text on this web site are copyrighted.
Besides this web site, the implementation project produced a Lessons Learned
document to summarize the knowledge gained in doing this project. This document should be
read in conjunction with the Guidelines
Document.
